Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
