Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
